This workshop—and the wider series of workshops—is based on how I use digital fabrication tools like laser cutting, CNC machining, and vinyl cutting within my own creative practice. There are many technical approaches out there, but what I’m sharing is the pathway I’ve carved out as a contemporary Māori artist using these tools to create mahi toi.
This isn’t just about learning machines—it’s about taking the reins, being in control, and having autonomy over both the process and the creative outcome. It’s about not having to rely on third parties who may not share the same understanding or affinity for what we’re ultimately trying to achieve.
These technologies give us the ability to prototype, design, and produce our own work from start to finish. That means telling our stories in our own way—on our own terms—while building skills that can grow with us as artists, designers, and creatives.
My goal is that you walk away not just with technical know-how, but with a clearer understanding of what’s possible—whether you choose to integrate this technology as a small addition to your current practice, or it becomes a central part of your creative process. And most importantly, that you gain the confidence to use these tools in a way that reflects your voice, your style, and who you are as an artist.
About this Workshop
This is a 3-hour CNC workshop designed from an artistic perspective — aimed at creatives looking to explore how CNC machining can be integrated into their art practice.
You’ll learn how to use a CNC router, turning basic digital ideas into tactile forms. Whether you're experimenting with patterns, carving, or shaping pieces, this workshop introduces you to the artistic potential of CNC technology. You’ll be guided through introductory process — from digital design to the final machined object — working with materials such as wood and acrylic.
What You'll Learn
In this hands-on session, you’ll explore:
-
How to create and prepare vector artwork for CNC machining
-
The basics of toolpaths and material settings
-
How different router bits perform certain teasks
-
Tips for safely securing and aligning your material on the machine bed
By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with a CNC piece and a basic understanding of CNC routers — and how they can support your creative mahi.
What you can bring if you have them – but not absolutely necessary.
-
Laptop with Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator
-
Ipad with Procreate
- Feel free to bring pens, pencils, drawing paper etc....
All other materials are provided and included in the workshop fee, along with a light refreshment.
