This workshop—and the wider series of workshops—is based on how I use digital fabrication tools like laser cutting, CNC machining, and vinyl cutting within my own creative practice. There are many technical approaches out there, but what I’m sharing is the pathway I’ve carved out as a contemporary Māori artist using these tools to create mahi toi.

This isn’t just about learning machines—it’s about taking the reins, being in control, and having autonomy over both the process and the creative outcome. It’s about not having to rely on third parties who may not share the same understanding or affinity for what we’re ultimately trying to achieve.

These technologies give us the ability to prototype, design, and produce our own work from start to finish. That means telling our stories in our own way—on our own terms—while building skills that can grow with us as artists, designers, and creatives.

My goal is that you walk away not just with technical know-how, but with a clearer understanding of what’s possible—whether you choose to integrate this technology as a small addition to your current practice, or it becomes a central part of your creative process. And most importantly, that you gain the confidence to use these tools in a way that reflects your voice, your style, and who you are as an artist.

About this Workshop

Aimed at artists, designers, and makers wanting to learn the foundations of vector design for digital fabrication and creative production.

Workshop Description:

This hands-on 2-hour workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of vector graphics — the backbone of digital fabrication. Whether you’re preparing designs for laser cutting, CNC, vinyl, or sandblasting, this session will teach you how to create clean, scalable, fabrication-ready artwork.

You'll learn to use vector software confidently, understand design file types, and get practical tips for turning sketches, logos, or patterns into files that machines can read.

🔧 What You’ll Learn:

  • What vector graphics are and why they matter

  • Introduction to software like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or CorelDRAW

  • How to create and edit basic shapes, paths, and curves

  • File setup for laser, CNC, or vinyl output

  • Tips for tracing drawings or turning ideas into vector format

What you can bring if you have them – but not absolutely necessary.

  • Laptop with Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator

  • Ipad with Procreate

  • Feel free to bring pens, pencils, drawing paper etc....

All other materials are provided and included in the workshop fee, along with a light refreshment.
